  • READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY. Before you begin, please review the material you will need to complete the Part I Test section of the application. You should be familiar with the regulations and judge's guidelines before proceeding. Answers that are incomplete cannot accepted. All documents submitted must be readable. You will receive an email copy of your application to retain for your records.

    AKC OBEDIENCE JUDGING APPLICANT TEST – PART I                                                 
    All questions should be answered in relation to the class level you are applying for.  Complete the questions 1-10 for each class separately.  See *CLASS LEVELS at the bottom of the page.

    1. Chapters 1 & 2 contain regulation information for clubs and judges. List the specific section number and name in each chapter that contains information a judge must know and understand. (Ch1 S8 AKC Sanction contains information that a club needs to follow, but does not apply directly to judging, so it would not be listed.) If any section contains information that pertains to the club and to the judge, list that chapter and section, and state the content that is directed at the judge.
    2. What are some key points you should consider when setting up the ring for each of the exercises? Which marks, if any, would you put in the ring for each exercise? (Novice applicants must include information about the Group Exercise.)
    3. What key points should you consider when determining the best judging position? List the points in order of importance.
    4. Submit a separate ring setup diagram for each class. Include the location of the entrance and table, cones and jumps, a detailed heeling pattern, and the location of each exercise including the start and end. (Novice applicants must include information about the Group Exercise.)
    5. On the same class diagram, indicate the best judging position for each exercise in relation to the dog and handler, your movements throughout each  exercise, and moving from exercise to exercise. 
    6. In detail, as if you were talking directly to a person, state the specific instructions you would give each steward.
    7. Based on your answer to question 4, state the judge's order you will use for each exercise, list each exercise separately.
    8. What are some of the most common dog and/or handler errors you will need to be aware of for each exercise in the relevant classes?
    9. Explain your understanding of each of the following and how you would mark the individual dog in the judge's book for each of the situations below.
      1. Disqualified
      2. Excused
      3. Released
      4. Dog on Dog Attack
      5. Handler Left Ring
      6. Fix n' Go
    10. Include a copy of the score sheet you intend to use for each class level.

    Novice applicants: Beginner Novice, Novice, Preferred Novice, and Graduate Novice

    Open applicants: Open (Order #1) and Graduate Open

    Utility applicants: Utility (Order #1) and Versatility

  • If your occupation or the occupation of a person with whom you reside falls under Part I of the Occupational Eligibility Addendum, you must submit a letter(s) with your application giving your (both) assurance(s) that if approved to judge you (both) will no longer be engaged in this occupation 30 days following the Committee's approval of your application and for the duration of your judging involvement. See Rules Applying to Dog Shows, Chapter 7, Section 1.

  • CERTIFICATION - As an Obedience and/or Rally Judge you agree to adhere to the certifications made when you sign the application to become an AKC judge. These certifications are stated below:

    I HEREBY submit my application to the Companion Events Judging Approval Committee of the AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB for its consideration and make the following certifications:

    I certify that I am occupationally eligible to judge under AKC Rules Applying to Dog Shows and will adhere to the restricitions, if applicable, outlined in Chapter 7, Section 1 and the Occupational Eligibility Addendum.

    I certify that I am familiar with the American Kennel Club's Rules, Regulations, Policies, the relevant sport regulations and judge's guidelines (AKC Obedience Regulations, and Obedience Judges' Guidelines, AKC Rally Regulations and Rally Judge's Guidelines) and agree to abide by them.

    I certify that if granted provisional or regular judging status. I fully understand that my judging eligibility is conditional, and therefore reviewable by the AKC Board of Directors at any time after the date the status is initially granted.

    I certify that upon review, AKC's Board of Directors may relieve me of continued judging eligibiity.

    I certify that I fully understand and stipulate that the committee's authorization to judge on a provisional basis does not guarantee or imply eventual approval as a regular judge.

    I certify that I understand and acknowledge that if I am charged with cruelty, inhumane treatment of animals, or similar offense involving inhumane or cruel treatment of dogs, or charged with any crime involving moral turpitude, especially as it concerns dog-related activities, the AKC may temporarily place my judging privileges on referral while the charges are pending. Further, after receiving notification of the referral. I am prevented from judging or from accepting assignments to judge. When the charges are resolved and AKC's inquiry into the matter determines that no action will be taken by the AKC to cause a suspension of my judging privileges, the temporary judging referral will be removed.

    I certify that I am a member in good standing with the American Kennel Club, 21 years of age or older, and that all informatio submitted in this application is truthful and accurate.
